A great part of the carbon emission generated from chess comes from travelling. A first step would be to encourage participants to avoid flights by reducing their starting fee if they travel climate friendly, negotiating about discounts on public transports, and making it possible to carbon offset for the journey while registering. Other possible actions to reduce carbon emission includes sharing material with other clubs, using renewable electricity for the live transmission and stream. For clubs and federations there is of course more to do.
Our ambition is to create a generic climate policy that’s easy to implement for tournaments, clubs and federation, and to show how a tournament’s carbon emission can be calculated.
